Christmas without mother: what’s next for Germany?
We’re getting nearer and nearer to the big day itself, and families are starting to travel from far and wide to spend the period with their nearest and dearest.
It’s the season of good will to all men. And yes, that does include your Great Aunt Mathilda.
But what starts with merriment can end with pistols at dawn, with one well-meant comment on the burnt potatoes turning into a full-blown family feud.
And don’t even think about getting the board games out if you want to maintain the peace.
As you tiptoe around the first mumblings of an argument, cast your mind to the new German government, which heads into Christmas without ‘Mutti’ (mother) at the helm.
The coalition – which replaces Angela Merkel’s conservative-led government – has been called a ‘never-before-seen marriage of convenience’.
It’s a new ‘traffic light coalition’ of Social Democrats, Greens and Free Democrats, led by Olaf Schloz.
This is the first time that the parties have partnered in federal government, and differences in their programmes and opinions are evident.
For now, the coalition partners agree on what Germany’s key priorities should be.
